Piper Ferguson (age 2) - audio used for part of the program
The little parts of the whole included ironing logos to each bandana, printing ethnic origin cards for the audience to fill out, creating a map of world highlighting each continent, but most importantly, listening to each audio/video file from countries all over the world, finding the essence of that rhythm and trimming it down to 30 seconds. It will be these 30 second audio files that will be played during the performance upon which the band will create an entirely new piece influenced by those sounds. The key element of this project!
Little details that make up the whole
Key Advisor, Rhythms of the World: Simeon Pillich
Special thank you to musician, ethnomusicologist and educator, Simeon Pillich, who provided a wealth of information on the rhythms of the world. His contributions were key to assembling the heart of this project. Simeon is a versatile bass player having accompanied such diverse artists as Taylor Swift, Ziggy Marley, Dr. Dre, Bo Diddley, Al Jarreau, John Hiatt, Eartha Kitt, Alice Cooper, Anthony Newley, Burt Bacharach, Van Dyke Parks, Ry Cooder, Tito Puente, Rita Coolidge, and Victoria Williams. He has also played in the musical scores of the films Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, The Two Jakes, The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle, and Lucky You, among others. Simeon has worked as a period and ethnic music consultant for film and TV since 1996, and was the host of KPFK’s “Global Village” for over five years where he championed and explored music from around the world. Simeon holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from UCLA, and is a professor at Occidental College, where he teaches courses in world music, and jazz history and music theory at Santa Monica College. He focuses his research on music of the Caribbean, music and the ecstatic state, and sociology of music.
